If you have children and are going through a divorce or other family law issue regarding custody and visitation, one of your largest concerns is probably the parenting time schedule. In most Atlanta family law cases, one parent is granted primary physical custody of the child or children. The other parent is usually said to have certain visitation rights or visitation periods with the children. Under Georgia law, these visitation periods are ultimately outlined in a Permanent Parenting Plan. The parenting plan may be agreed upon by the parties or may be ordered by the court if the parties cannot agree.

There are many variables to think about when crafting a visitation schedule. Some of these include the following:

Is there a regular schedule for visitation, such as every other weekend?
When will a weekend begin and end?
Will there be a different schedule followed during the summer?
How will you handle holidays? Are there particular religious holidays that are important to you?
What about other days the children may have free from school such as teacher work days and half days?
Who will provide transportation for the children at the beginning and end of visitation?
Will there be transportation expenses for long distance visitation? If so, who will pay them?
Do you need specific terms included regarding when and how the children can contact each parent?
What about restrictions on parents having overnight guests while the children are in their custody?
In extreme cases, should a supervisor be required for visitation?
