Modification of Child Support

If you would like to discuss a potential modification of your child support agreement for any reason, one of our Atlanta family lawyers can help.

Georgia judges determine the value of child support based on the total income of both parents, adjusted for other expenses and then allocated to each parent based on his or her share of the total income. But whenever a child’s needs change and they require less or more child support, a modification of a child support order can be granted.

The non-custodial parent also has the legal right to request a modification in child support. If for instance a parent loses his or her job, that parent can request to have their child support agreement modified. This modification could be an increase or a decrease in the amount of support paid each month or a change in the frequency of child support payments.

Our Atlanta Family Attorney Can Help You Through the Process

The state of Georgia has attempted to provide a straightforward process to requesting a modification of a child support order. In order to request a court hearing, the petitioner must file all paperwork for the specific type of modification. You do not need an attorney to file the required forms, however it is in your best interest to hire a lawyer with the legal knowledge of family law.
